چکیده
12 AI MAGAZINE ■ The 1956 Dartmouth summer research project on artificial intelligence was initiated by this August 31, 1955 proposal, authored by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon. The original typescript consisted of 17 pages plus a title page. Copies of the typescript are housed in the archives at Dartmouth College and Stanford University. The first 5 papers state the proposal, and the remaining pages give qualifications and interests of the four who proposed the study. In the interest of brevity, this article reproduces only the proposal itself, along with the short autobiographical statements of the proposers.

Contribution of fuzziness and uncertainty to modern artificial intelligence
On the 31st August 1955, J. McCarthy (Dartmouth College, New Hampshire), M.L. Minsky (Harvard University), N. Rochester (I.B.M. Corporation) and C.E. Shannon (Bell Telephone Laboratories) proposed a meeting to a group of researchers to be held in the summer of 1956 in order to provide ideas on each aspect of learning and each feature of intelligence capable of being simulated on machines. Durin...

This special issue came to our mind to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Casals and Fernández-Caballero, 2007; Fernández-Caballero et al., 2008), with the aim of showing the interdisciplinarity of the fields of Pattern Recognition (PR), Intelligence and Perception, being them artificial or natural. Pattern Recognition is a field with a strong relation ...

Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon, and Nathaniel Rochester for the 1956 event, McCarthy wanted, as he explained at AI@50, “to nail the flag to the mast.” McCarthy is credited for coining the phrase “artificial intelligence” and solidifying the orientation of the field. It is interesting to speculate whether the field would have been any different had it been called “computational intelligence” or a...
متن کاملWorkflow and web service standards
Workflow and Business Process Management (BPM) standards would greatly help workplaces by allowing multiple systems to be easily integrated. Such standards have been under development for a long time, resulting in what seem to be very few real results. There are number of reasons why these standards seem like they can be developed quickly, but in practice they are rather difficult to agree upon...
متن کاملNatural Language Processing with Thought Treasure
When the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence was held in 1956, the creation of an intelligent computer seemed to be just around the corner. Since then, the number of researchers in the field has grown to over 10,000 and the number of pages in the biennial proceedings of the international joint conference on artificial intelligence to 2074. And here we are, over 40 years...
